A good question my friend, “What does streaming mean?!”
It is one we have been asked at least a 1,000 times, and we wouldn't be serving you if we don't answer you properly!
I'm sure your wincing as we did just before we learned the true meaning of streaming!
We were sure that we were going to hear a bunch of jargon about computer programming, media files, etc…
The truth is we didn't hear none of that!
We got a simple answer for simple folks.
We actually learned that we have streamed already, and we learned why wanted to know what streaming was.
In today's post you just may learn, “what does streaming mean?”, and how to leverage this technology of streaming TV, streaming movies, and live streaming for home entertainment!
What Does Streaming Mean?
Maybe your old enough to remember “You've Got Mail”?!!
Back when the internet first came on the scene, you had to wait for a dial-up modem to fully download your file before you could actually use the contents of the download.
I can actually remember having enough time to start a file downloading and go make me a hearty sandwich and pour a glass of milk. When I returned the download was still in progress!
Just remembering that also takes me back to the time before we actually had cable or remotes controls.
Dad would actually make one of us kids the remote, LOL!
Who can remember the foil around the rabbit ears to improve reception?
Simple times, where time wasn't an issue and families actually enjoyed home entertainment with each other.
Before I get to far off track going down memory lane, understand in the early days of the internet media and audio content was delivered as a complete download before you could actually listen to it or watch it!
Now as technology advances comes along the ability to stream!
You actually are able to use the content as it is being delivered!
Think about it, when you actually hit play on music the audio is accessible almost immediately for you to use.
This is called streaming!
The file is no longer stored on your device as a progressive download!
Streaming from the internet has opened a ton of choices for folks!
One of the major advantages of streaming: it delivers content to you as you need it.
The other major difference between streaming and downloads is what happens to the content after you use it.
When you download, the content is stored on your device until you delete it.
For streams, the content is automatically deleted after you use it.
A song you stream from Spotify isn't saved to your computer.
Unless of course you download it for later use!
What Does Streaming Mean?: There are some disadvantages
The good news is these disadvantages are in our control! (more on that in few!)
Because streaming delivers content as you need it, slow or dropped internet connections can cause problems.
For example, if you've only streamed the first 30 seconds of a video and the internet connection drops just after 30 seconds, the video will stop playing.
The most common streaming disadvantage that arises has to do with buffering.
The buffer is a program's temporary memory where streamed content goes.
The buffer is always filling up with the content you'll need next.
For instance, if you're watching a movie, the buffer stores the next few minutes of video while you're watching the current content.
If your internet connection is too slow, the content won't fill up the buffer quickly enough and the stream will either stop or the quality of the audio or video will be compromised.
However, here is the fix to slow internet speed!
Simply call or visit them online, and question your internet service provider as to the speed and what plan you actually have.
I tell you this from experience!
Here is what happened to me.
I called when I started streaming because of buffering.
Know keep in mind there are several different variables in play here! (don't fret! We will educate you)
As for now, be sure to take this first step.
You see I had paid for over six months for the top-tier internet service the cable company offered.
So I had to wonder why was I buffering when streaming.
When I called, I learned even though I was paying for the top-tier I was only receiving the bottom tier because of an upgrade not yet done in the area I lived in.
You can imagine my dismay, right!
I mean why wouldn't good products come with good customer service?
Why would a company with part of the monopoly in the home entertainment industry deceive it's customers and take their money.
That's how I found the Cord Cutting revolution.
I'm passionate about sharing with you about streaming and the next revolution in the home entertainment industry!
Oh, and before I forget I actually got credited from my internet service provider. Oh, and they actually threw me bone as well!!!
